Which Finger Is the Ring Finger? A Jeweler's Guide to Every Finger

Key Takeaways

  • The fourth finger on each hand is the ring finger, between the middle finger and the pinky.
  • In the US, engagement rings and wedding bands go on the left hand. Many countries, such as Russia and Poland, commonly use the right.
  • The custom goes back to Roman writers. England's 1549 Book of Common Prayer moved the wedding ring to the left hand.
  • The "vein of love" is a myth. Every finger's veins lead back to the heart.
  • Wear your wedding band closest to the palm, with the engagement ring on top.
  • Size the finger in the afternoon, and size each hand separately.

The ring finger is the fourth finger on either hand. It sits between the middle finger and the pinky, counting the thumb as the first. In the United States, engagement rings and wedding bands are traditionally worn on the ring finger of the left hand.

That's the quick answer.

The rest is more interesting. Which hand do men use? Where did the custom start? Is there really a "vein of love"? (Spoiler: no.)

We've been a family-owned jeweler in Austin since 1997, so we've sized a lot of ring fingers. Below is what we tell people at our bench, including what rings on fingers mean and the best finger for every ring you own.

Which Finger Is the Ring Finger?

Hold up your hand and count from the thumb. The one rings go on is number four.

  1. Thumb
  2. Index finger
  3. Middle finger
  4. Ring finger
  5. Pinky

Every hand has one. In the US, though, people almost always mean the left one, since that's where engagement rings and wedding bands go.

Is the Ring Finger the Third or Fourth Finger?

Both. It depends on whether you count the thumb.

Most Americans count the thumb as finger one, which makes it the fourth finger. Dictionaries often skip the thumb. Merriam-Webster defines it as the third finger, counting the index finger as the first.

How you count Thumb counts? What it's called
Everyday US usage Yes Fourth finger
Dictionaries and older English texts No Third finger

That's why the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, which you'll meet below, names the third finger of the left hand. Same finger, different math.

Which Hand Is the Ring Finger On?

In the US, it's the left hand. Engagement rings and wedding bands both go there, for brides and grooms alike.

If you're shopping for men's wedding bands, size the left hand, not the right. Here's the short version of US custom:

  • Engagement ring: left hand
  • Wedding band: left hand, below the engagement ring
  • Men's wedding band: left hand
  • Promise ring: usually the right hand (more on that below)

Left vs. Right Ring Fingers Around the World

Here's the truth: there's no global rule. Which of your two ring fingers gets the band depends on country, religion and family tradition.

Usually the left hand Commonly the right hand
United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Italy Russia, Poland, Greece, Bulgaria, Germany (after the wedding)

Treat this as a rough guide, since customs vary within countries, too. In many families the two rings go on different hands, and some couples switch at the ceremony.

What Does a Ring on the Right Ring Finger Mean?

In the US, a ring there usually isn't a wedding ring. Most often, it's one of these:

  • A promise ring
  • A class ring
  • A fashion or cocktail ring
  • A family heirloom

There's one more, and it's a tender one. Some widowed spouses move their wedding band to the right hand so they can keep wearing it.

Why Is It Called the Ring Finger?

Because it's the finger that wears the ring. English speakers have called it that since Old English, when it was the hring finger, according to Merriam-Webster's word historians.

It hasn't always had such a pretty name. Older English texts also call it:

  • The leech finger (leech was an old word for a doctor)
  • The medical or physic finger
  • The heart finger
  • The nameless finger, briefly, in the 1600s

The custom itself is far older. GIA's history of engagement rings traces it to Rome, and England took a while to catch up, according to a 16th-century wedding ring at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

When What changed
5th century Roman writer Macrobius placed the betrothal ring on the fourth finger of the left hand.
Early 1500s English brides usually received the ring on the right hand.
1549 The first Book of Common Prayer moved it to the left hand.
1614 The Catholic Rituale Romanum also adopted the left hand.

Why the 1549 switch? The museum says scholars likely corrected a misreading of the Roman author Aulus Gellius, whose "heart vein" finger was on the left hand.

The Vena Amoris Myth

That vein is the romantic part. Romans believed it ran from this finger straight to the heart, and it came to be called the vena amoris, the vein of love.

The idea lasted for centuries. A 1658 English translation of Dutch physician Levinus Lemnius still described a vessel that:

"...is stretched forth from the heart unto this finger."

Lovely idea. Not true. A fact-check from Africa Check explains that the veins in every finger feed larger veins that carry blood back to the heart. No finger has a private line.

So tradition, not anatomy, keeps the custom alive. We think that makes it sweeter.

How to Wear an Engagement Ring and Wedding Band on One Finger

Both rings share one finger, so order matters. The traditional stack puts the wedding band on first, closest to your palm, with the engagement ring on top.

Why that order? The saying goes that the band sits closest to your heart. It also keeps the center stone where everyone can see it.

A few tips from our bench:

  1. On the wedding day, move your engagement ring to your right hand before the ceremony. Your partner slides the band onto a bare finger, and you restack afterward.
  2. Check how the two rings meet. Some engagement rings have a setting that dips toward the finger, which leaves a gap next to a straight band.
  3. Close the gap with a curved wedding band. It follows the shape of the setting, so both rings sit flush.
  4. Try them on as a pair. Bring your engagement ring when you shop women's wedding bands, so you see the full stack before you decide.

What Do Rings on Each Finger Mean?

Every finger has its own story. The meanings below come from tradition and palmistry, not rules, so wear what you love.

Still, if you've ever wondered what rings on fingers say about the wearer, here's the traditional read.

Rings on fingers: traditional meanings and the rings usually worn there
Finger Traditional association Rings usually worn there
Thumb Independence, willpower Wide bands, thumb rings
Index finger Leadership, confidence Statement rings, family crest rings
Middle finger Balance, responsibility Bold fashion rings
Ring finger Love, commitment Engagement, wedding and promise rings
Pinky Heritage, status Signet rings, pinky rings

What's the bottom line? A ring on the ring finger is the only placement most Americans read as "taken." Everything else is personal style.

That leaves you plenty of room to play. A colorful stone on your index or middle finger makes a statement without sending a signal. Browse our gemstone rings or all of our fine jewelry rings for ideas.

What Is the Best Finger to Wear a Ring?

The best finger to wear a ring depends on the ring. Here's the quick guide we give customers:

  • Engagement ring and wedding band: left ring finger
  • Promise ring: same finger on the right hand, or the left until you're engaged
  • Class ring: same finger on the right hand
  • Signet ring: pinky of your non-dominant hand
  • Statement or cocktail ring: index or middle finger
  • Stacks: ring and middle fingers, using stacking rings in mixed metals or widths

Comfort matters as much as custom. A ring you keep taking off isn't doing its job, so pick a finger where it won't snag on your day.

Fit Tips From Our Bench

The best part? Most fit problems are easy to avoid if you size the right way. Here's what our GIA-certified staff tells people:

  1. Wear everyday rings on your non-dominant hand. That hand takes fewer knocks, so stones and prongs last longer.
  2. Size each hand separately. Fingers on your dominant hand often run slightly larger.
  3. Size in the afternoon. Fingers shrink in the cold and swell a little as the day warms up, so afternoon gives a truer everyday size.
  4. Go a touch bigger for wide bands. A wide band covers more skin, so it fits snugger than a thin band in the same size.
  5. Get full eternity bands right the first time. With stones all the way around, they usually can't be resized. We explain why in can eternity rings be resized?

Ring Finger FAQs

Can I wear a ring on my ring finger if I'm single?

Yes. There's no rule against it, and plenty of people wear a favorite ring there.

Just know that in the US, a ring on the left one often reads as "engaged" or "married." If you'd rather skip the questions, use your right hand.

Which finger does a promise ring go on?

Most people wear a promise ring on the fourth finger of the right hand.

Some wear it on the left until they get engaged, then move it to the right to make room. Either choice is fine.

Do men wear wedding rings on the left hand?

In the US, yes. Men usually wear their wedding band on the left hand, the same as their partner.

In countries where the right hand is the norm, men typically follow that custom instead.

Is my left ring finger the same size as my right?

Often, no. Fingers on your dominant hand tend to run slightly larger.

Measure the hand you'll actually wear the ring on. Our complimentary in-store sizing covers both hands.

Can I wear my wedding ring on a different finger?

Absolutely. People move their band for comfort, work, swelling or a ring that no longer fits.

It means the same thing on any finger. If fit is the problem, ask us about resizing before you switch.
